School Outreach

The Department of Earth Sciences provides various opportunities for secondary students and school teachers to enhance their interests and knowledge in Earth Sciences. Twice a year, an Open Day is organized for school students. The Department also often organizes fieldtrips to localities of geological interest in Hong Kong and nearby in which school students may participate. The Department will provide guided tours through the new geological museum which houses a display of rocks, minerals and fossils and interactive displays on geological features including volcanism, tectonics, geological time, Tibetan studies and earthquakes.

DES provides summer research experience for secondary students interested in the Earth Sciences. Students are placed with a particular research group and undertake certain components of some major research projects under the supervision of DES staff.

We also organize a Geography Teachers Workshop in which DES staff will describe resources and facilities in the Department which can support teaching and learning in the secondary school sector. During the workshops and at other convenient times as necessary, we can discuss with teachers the teaching of Earth Sciences components in the school curriculum.

Teachers and students who are interested in the workshop and summer research projects may send an email to .
