Presently active intra-oceanic island arc volcano Anatahan in the Mariana Islands, a scenario comparable to that of the Cretaceous intra-Tethyan island arc.

Radiolarians

Chert, a marine sediment from the Tethyan ocean floor (left), contains important radiolarian microfossils (right) that allow precise age determinations of the timing of sedimentation and the generation of the underlying oceanic crust within the Tethyan ocean.

Molasse sediments

This Liuqu conglomerate from Jiding, Xigaze is a terrestrial molasse deposit eroded from the oceanic island arc uplifted in response to a collision. It contains detritus shed from the Indian, Tethys and intra-oceanic arc terrranes but not from the Asian continent and therefore records an earlier collision event prior to the India-Asia collision.
