HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS IN THE SOUTH CAUCASUS: QUANTIFYING LAND CHANGE OVER THE HOLOCENE

Nestled between Europe and Asia, the South Caucasus has been a cradle of ancient agricultural practices. Its rugged terrain and dry climate render it susceptible to climate change. Delving into the region's agricultural past and adaptive strategies is imperative for historical insight and sustainable futures. How has land use transformed over millennia? What are the spatial ramifications? Here, I show that land use in the South Caucasus changed over 8 millennia, spanning from hunting-gathering to agro-pastoralism, intensified agriculture, and profit-centric land utilization shaped by ancient trade routes from the Near East.
