SHARING IDEAS ON RESEARCH: QUANTIFYING AUTHOR CONTRIBUTIONS AND THE MEANING OF AUTHORSHIP

As part of the HKU Library’s “Research Intelligence” programme, which is aimed primarily at early-career and research post-graduate students, on March 24 2021 Dr Jason Ali delivered to both and on- and off-campus audience a talk entitled: “Quantitative author inputs to STEM-subject research publications: results, insights and potential applications from a survey of Earth scientists” https://libguides.lib.hku.hk/blog/Research-IntelligenceHKUL-Scholars-Insight). There, he outlined the findings of a research project that has just been published in Geological Magazine (https://www-cambridge-org.eproxy.lib.hku.hk/core/journals/geological-magazine/article/quantitative-author-inputs-to-earth-science-research-publications-survey-results-insights-and-potential-applications/C00EAEB2D80422DD9E463F0441F0B29D). The aim of the presentation (an Associated PDF can be found here) was to raise awareness about the meaning of authorship. In the Q&A that followed, important topics that were raised included (i) the issue of estimating author contributions, and (ii) the applicability of the findings to the non-STEM disciplines.
