After Gondwana's dispersal, India moved northwards as the vast Tethys Ocean that lay between Asia and India was subducted beneath Asia forming a continental arc. Like modern oceans of today, Tethys also contained oceanic island arcs. India collided with one of them during its northward migration ca. 55 million years ago.
