Gas content of magmas

The violence of an explosive eruption is determined by the water and gas content and the viscosity of the magma, which inhibits the release of gas and promotes the build-up of internal pressure in vesicles. Low viscosity magmas with low gas contents lead to a non-explosive volcanism while high viscosity magmas with high gas contents will lead to explosive eruptions fragmenting the magma into pyroclasts (hot fragments).
