HEAD MESSAGE

Welcome to the Department of Earth Sciences at The University of Hong Kong! As the Interim Department Head, I am pleased to introduce you to our vibrant community of researchers, educators, and students committed to understanding and exploring the natural processes of our dynamic Earth.

 

Since its establishment, the Department of Earth Sciences has grown to become a leading institution for Earth Sciences in Hong Kong and the region. Our interdisciplinary approach and rigorous academic programs enable us to provide students with a solid foundation in the Earth Sciences and foster a rich learning environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

 

Our dedicated faculty members are internationally recognized experts in their respective fields, with research interests spanning a wide range of topics, including Solid Earth and Earth History, Planetary Sciences, Global Change and Environmental Science & Applied/Urban Geosciences. Through our research, we aim to address pressing global and local challenges and contribute to a sustainable future.

 

At the undergraduate level, we offer a comprehensive Bachelor of Science programmes in Geology, Geology (Intensive), Earth System Science, or Environmental Science that combine core knowledge and hands-on learning experiences, such as fieldwork, internships, and exchange programs. We also provide a Minor programmes that allow students from other disciplines to enrich their studies with an understanding of the mother nature.

 

Our postgraduate programs include both research-intensive (MPhil and PhD) and coursework-based (MSc in Applied Geosciences) options, designed to cater to diverse academic and professional aspirations. These programs provide students with advanced training and research opportunities, preparing them for successful careers in academia, industry, government, and non-governmental organizations.


Aside from our academic programs, we are also dedicated to engaging with the wider community through museum exhibition, public lectures, workshops, and outreach activities. We believe that fostering a strong connection between science and society is crucial for addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.
