SUPPORTING DIOCESAN GIRLS' SCHOOL AND DIOCESAN BOYS' SCHOOL FOR 2025 INTERNATIONAL YOUNG PHYSICISTS' TOURNAMENT

Our department proudly supported a team of talented secondary students from Diocesan Girls' School and Diocesan Boys' School, who will represent Hong Kong at the 2025 International Young Physicists' Tournament (https://www.iypt.org/). Under the leadership of Mr. Yeung Wing Ki, a physics teacher at Diocesan Girls' School, the team expertly solved 12 challenging physics problems, including "Levitating Fluid" and "Spaghetti Accelerator."

Prof. Louis Wong generously provided the team with access to a high-speed Phantom v711 camera in his research lab. Alongside his PhD student, Zihan Liu, Prof. Wong advised on the experimental setup and the use of the high-speed camera to capture detailed phenomena such as the fracturing of spaghetti and the dynamics of bubble motion in liquids. After previous unsuccessful attempts with other high-speed cameras, the team sought Prof. Wong's expertise. The Phantom v711 camera is capable of capturing up to 7,530 frames per second at full resolution and up to 1,400,000 at reduced resolutions to meet the team’s requirements.

We sincerely appreciate Prof. Wong and Zihan for providing equipment and invaluable guidance to the young scientists throughout their experimental journey. This initiative underlines our department's dedication to knowledge exchange, community service and nurturing the future generation of scientific minds. We wish the team the very best in their competition!
