YELLOWSTONE'S NATURAL CONTAMINANTS: SOURCE, FATE AND TRANSPORT OF AS, F, AND HG, FROM THERMAL WATERS

Abstract
Dr. Nordstrom and his colleagues have been sampling thermal waters for 28 years in Yellowstone National Park. Results from their work have shown that high concentrations of arsenic, fluoride, and mercury occur naturally in these thermal waters and the chemistry is quite complex with speciation being an important key to understanding element mobility.

 

Biography
Dr. D. Kirk Nordstrom is a Senior Hydrogeochemist with more than 40 years’ experience with the U.S. Geological Survey. He has a B.A. in Chemistry, an M.S. in Geology, and a Ph.D. in Geochemistry (Stanford University, 1977). Dr. Nordstrom is recognized internationally for his research on acid mine drainage, radioactive waste disposal, geothermal chemistry, geomicrobiology, analytical chemistry, and geochemical modeling and has published more than 260 papers including 2 books.
