ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD WORK OF SHAKENGNAN, A PREHISTORIC SITE AT JIESHENG PENINSULA, EAST GUANGDONG PROVINCE, CHINA
Dongkengnan Site (DKN) is a prehistoric site located at the Jiesheng Peninsula of eastern Guangdong Province, China. It was first discovered in the 1930s, and we conducted re-investigation and research work during 2022-2024. The fieldwork at the site includes three parts. First, we used Unmanned Aerial System equipped with LiDAR to acquire topographic data and Ground Penetrating Radar to investigate natural deposits. After that, we investigated the surface remains in detail and used ArcGIS software for data processing and image presentation. Lastly, we did trial excavation at the site and obtained various kinds of ancient remains, such as potteries, stone tools, stone cooking stoves. All archaeological data suggest that DKN was a long-term settlement, belonging to Houshan Culture (后山文化) of 3300-3800 years ago. The Houshan people here chose to live on the top edges of the dune near both coastline and river, and they built mud houses in the southern part of the site and stone cookstoves in the north and west. The high proportion of cooking pottery, small stone tools and other relics at the site provide important evidence for the subsistence study of Houshan people.
