THEMATIC COURSE ON ROCK MECHANICS AND ROCK ENGINEERING
2025.01.24
From 10th to 11th January 2025, the Department of Earth Sciences, in collaboration with the HKIE Geotechnical Division and IOM3 HK, co-organized the Thematic Course on Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering. The course was delivered by the globally recognized Dr. Nick Barton, who is an ISRM Müller Award recipient. The event took place at the Wang Gangwu Lecture Hall, Graduate House, and was attended by more than 250 enthusiastic participants, among whom were many graduates from the DES.
The course delved into classic rock mechanics and rock engineering topics including shear strength and stiffness, Barton-Bandis aspects of rock joint behavior, the evolution of the Q-system over 50 years, discontinuum and continuum numerical modeling, as well as pre-grouting and ground control for tunneling. These topics hold significant relevance to the local engineering geology context.
Prof. Louis Wong, representing the organizing committee, delivered a welcome speech. A special note of gratitude is extended to the volunteers from the DES whose efforts greatly contributed to the remarkable success of this event.
