POSTDOC DR. KAI ZHAO AWARDED RGC JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOW SCHEME

2025.05.12

The Research Grants Council (RGC) has announced the results of the Junior Research Fellow Scheme (JRFS) for 2025/26. Dr. Kai Zhao, a Postdoctoral Fellow in Prof. Louis Ngai Yuen Wong’s group in the Department of Earth Sciences, has been awarded the RGC JRFS in recognition of his exceptional academic performance.

The RGC JRFS supports 60 awardees annually, aiming to assist promising postdoctoral researchers at UGC-funded universities during a critical early stage in their careers. The fellowship facilitates their transition to Assistant Professor or Research Assistant Professor roles at UGC-funded universities, thereby nurturing a pool of research talent to advance research and development in Hong Kong and foster a robust research culture.

As the sole recipient from the Faculty of Science, Dr Zhao completed his Ph.D. from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2023 under the supervision of Prof. Chunhe YANG, an Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was also listed among the 47th Round University Research Committee (URC) Post-doctoral Fellow Scheme at HKU. His research primarily focuses on underground energy storage and rock thermal strengthening. The Department of Earth Sciences congratulates Dr. Zhao on receiving this prestigious fellowship.
