TECHNICAL COURSE ON HONG KONG: ROCK ENGINEERING AND ROCK MECHANICS COURSE WITH Q EMPHASIS

2026.01.16

From 16 to 17 January 2026, the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (DEPS), in collaboration with the HKIE Geotechnical Division and IOM3 HK, co-organized the Technical Course on Hong Kong: Rock Engineering and Rock Mechanics with Q Emphasis.

The course was delivered by the internationally renowned Dr Nick Barton, recipient of the ISRM Müller Award. Held at the Yuet Ming Auditorium in Hong Kong, the event attracted over 200 enthusiastic participants, including many graduates from DEPS.

The course covered key topics in rock mechanics and rock engineering, including Q-parameter interpretation from GI data, case records from cavern projects, good practices in groundwater control, and the practical use of numerical modelling. These topics are highly relevant to engineering geology practice in Hong Kong.

Prof Louis Wong, Associate Head (Research) of DEPS, delivered the welcome address on behalf of the organizing committee. Special thanks are extended to the volunteers from DES, whose efforts contributed to the success of the event.
