PROFESSOR DR NICOLE KHAN HAS BEEN AWARDED THE 2025 SIR NICHOLAS SHACKLETON MEDAL

2026.02.05

Dr. Nicole Khan, the 2025 medal winner, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong. Her research uses sedimentary, microfossil, and geochemical indicators to understand past and present sea-level changes and their impacts on coastal ecosystems. Her work addresses critical methodological challenges in sea-level research, developing alternative proxies using stable isotopes and environmental DNA when traditional indicators are poorly preserved. Khan founded and leads the HOLSEA project — a global collaborative initiative to create a standardized post-glacial sea-level database. This interdisciplinary work challenges long-standing paradigms about Holocene sea-level evolution and informs future projections for coastal adaptation planning worldwide.
