TITLE: PHD STUDENT SIHAO YU WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP IN YOUNG PERSONS LECTURE COMPETITION (HONG KONG HEAT) 2024.
2024.10.02
The Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition (YPWLC) is organized by the IOM3 (the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining). This prestigious event aims to foster knowledge sharing and cross-industry exposure among young scientists and engineers in the fields of Materials, Minerals, Mining, Packaging, Clay Technology, Wood Science, Science, and or Engineering related subject.
As part of the competition, the YPLC 2024 (Hong Kong Heat) was successfully held on 19 September 2024. YU Sihao, a second-year PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Louis WONG from the Department of Earth Sciences at HKU won the championship with a topic ‘A Deep Learning-based Framework for Automatic Rock Core Logging’. He has been awarded a prize of HK$1500 and he will represent IOM3(HK) at the Young Persons' World Lecture Competition Final in November 2024.
In his lecture, Sihao shared his latest research on improving automatic lithology classification and Rock Quality Designation (RQD) estimation. A deep learning-based framework has been trained to classify rock cores into different categories. Moreover, this framework can also segment cores at a high accuracy, allowing the subsequent automatic RQD calculation. Upon further verification, the plan is to update the framework and integrate it into a publicly accessible website for widespread use. This work has significant implications for local geotechnical engineering practice.
Let's wish YU Sihao the best of luck as he heads to the YPLC World Final in November 2024!
